What is an eSIM?

A short, non-technical explanation of what eSIM means and why it matters for travel.

Updated May 15, 2026

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small chip already built into your phone. Instead of swapping a piece of plastic, you install a "profile" — basically a software file — by scanning a QR code. The chip stores it, your phone uses it as if it were a real SIM card.

Why it matters when you travel

  • No SIM swap. Your home SIM stays in its slot. You keep iMessage, 2FA codes, family calls.
  • 30-second activation. No queue at the airport, no passport-scan paperwork.
  • Cheaper than roaming. Local rates wherever you land, with no kickback to your home carrier.

Which phones support it?

Any iPhone since 2018 (XS or newer), any Pixel since 3, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, plus many recent OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi models. If your phone has an EID number in Settings → About, it has eSIM.
