Carrier locking means your home carrier (Verizon, AT&T, EE, etc.) restricts your phone to their network until certain conditions are met — usually completing the financing or staying with the carrier for a minimum period.
A locked phone will let you install the Telekonek eSIM profile, but the line won't activate when you try to use it abroad.
How to check
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for Network Provider Lock. If it says "No SIM Restrictions", you're unlocked. Anything else, you're locked.
- Android: dial
##786#(CDMA carriers) or check Settings → About phone → SIM status.
How to unlock
Contact your home carrier and request an unlock. Most carriers will unlock for free once:
- Your phone is fully paid off, AND
- You've been an active customer for 60+ days.
US carrier typical timelines:
- Verizon: instant (postpaid lines) to 60 days
- AT&T: 2–3 business days
- T-Mobile: 1–14 days
International carriers vary widely. The carrier's website usually has a form titled "Unlock my device".
Workaround
If you need data abroad immediately and unlock is going to take days, a local prepaid SIM at your destination's airport is your fallback — slow, but it works.
